Retrieval Practice / Testing Effect

After an initial study phase, participants restudy some items and attempt to recall others, then take a delayed final test on all material. Better retention for tested items than for restudied items demonstrates the testing effect and is used to quantify how active retrieval strengthens long-term memory.
