Categorical Perception
Participants categorise stimuli that vary along an acoustic continuum (most commonly speech sounds) into discrete perceptual categories. The hallmark is sharper discrimination across category boundaries than within. Heavily used in studies of phoneme perception, especially non-native speech learning (e.g. /r/–/l/ for Japanese listeners, dental vs retroflex for English listeners).
